Strategies to Measure & Improve ED Performance

WHO SHOULD PARTICIPATE: CMOs, CNOs, compliance officers, emergency department personnel, joint commission coordinators, medical records staff, quality improvement personnel, risk managers, and legal counsel

OVERVIEW: In the post-pandemic world, the healthcare system remains at or over capacity, leaving many organizations struggling with how to meet patient demand. The system is plagued by many issues, including an aging population; exacerbation of acute health conditions; lack of access to primary care providers and urgent care; and staffing issues like shortages, turnover, and burnout. Additionally, the emergency department (ED) is an open door for those in need of healthcare, and overcrowding has become the norm. Overcrowding in the ED creates additional risks for a healthcare organization, including lack of quality and safe care, regulatory violations, patient dissatisfaction, low staff engagement, physician dissatisfaction, and more. This webinar will share how to overcome these obstacles and more.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Discuss the impacts of throughput issues and inefficiencies in your ED, including long length of stay, patients left without being seen, boarders, and overcrowding;
  • Describe how length of stay and patient departures before being seen impact the hospital’s bottomline;
  • List major factors contributing to overcrowding in the ED and describe the importance of front-end triage accuracy;
  • Review best practices to mitigate risks in the ED; and
  • Describe how to benchmark appropriate productivity and discuss the benefits.
