Every hospital that has an ED and accepts Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement must follow the federal law and CMS interpretive guidelines on the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA).

Part 1 – September 12, 2019

Will cover the basic concept of EMTALA and locating the associated regulations on the internet. The speaker will discuss the Office of Civil Rights and EMTALA definitions and requirements, and standards from The Joint Commission.

 

Part 2 – September 19, 2019

Will cover the recent changes by the Office of Inspector General (OIG), which will impact on-call physicians and recent OIG investigations. The speaker will focus on EMTALA issues, including payment concerns, patient financial questions, the required policies and procedures, and hospital recommendations. The speaker will also discuss EMTALA special responsibilities and EMTALA outpatients, inpatients and observation.

 

Part 3 – September 26, 2019

Will cover how EMTALA is involved in various hospital processes including medial screenings, certification of false labor, telemetry, when hospitals can go on diversion and who can be a Quality Metrics Partner. The speaker will also review requests for medication, blood alcohol tests, emergency medical conditions, OB and behavioral health patients, and the QIO’s role within EMTALA.

OBJECTIVES:

At the conclusion of these session, participant will be able to:

  • Discuss why EMTALA is the most frequently-cited deficiency for hospitals;
  • Describe the basic concept and requirements of EMTALA;
  • Discuss the hospital’s requirement to maintain a list of the specific names of physicians who are on call to evaluate ED patients;
  • Identify CMS requirements of what must be on the EMTALA sign;
  • Discuss when a hospital must complete a certification of false labor;
  • Explain state plans and EMTALA;
  • Discuss what is involved in medications; and
  • Describe the Quality Improvement Organization role with EMTALA.

FACULTY

Sue Dill Calloway, President, Patient Safety and Health Care Education and Consulting

Sue has been a nurse attorney and consultant for more than 30 years. Currently, she is president of Patient Safety and Healthcare Education and Consulting and previously was the chief learning officer for the Emergency Medicine Patient Safety Foundation. She has conducted many educational programs for nurses, physicians and other healthcare providers. She has authored over 100 books and numerous articles. She is a frequent speaker and is well known across the country in the area of healthcare law, risk management and patient safety.


REGISTRATION DEADLINE:
Registrations are due into the LHA office one week prior to the webinar in order to ensure timely delivery of instructions and handout.

REGISTRATION:
Log in online to register. VISA, Master Card, Discover or American Express are accepted. Email confirmations will be sent to all registrants who list an accurate email address. Webinar materials are provided 1-2 business days in advance of the webinar. Once webinar materials are distributed no refunds will be issued and full payment is expected.

CANCELLATION POLICY:

Cancellations received in writing up to one week prior to a scheduled event will be charged a cancellation fee of $40 (per person, per event). Registrants who are unable to attend an LHA educational event are permitted to, and encouraged to send a substitute without incurring a cancellation fee. Please send written notice of any substitutions prior to the scheduled event. Cancellations received less than one week prior to the scheduled event, or individuals who fail to attend will result in a non-refundable registration fee.


TRANSFER POLICY:
Transfer requests must be in writing and received one week prior to the event to receive a credit to use at a later date. A $40 transfer fee will be charged.  The LHA will hold your credit for a period of one year following the start date of the program for which you were originally registered. Transfer requests received less than one week prior to event will result in a non-refundable registration fee.

SUBSTITUTION POLICY: Registrants who are unable to participate in an LHA educational event are permitted and encouraged to have an eligible substitute; however, written notice of the substitution must be emailed to [email protected] at least seven business days in advance of the event. The substitution option is not available if written notification is received by the LHA less than seven business days before the scheduled program.
