WHO SHOULD ATTEND

Current or anticipated leaders ranging from high-level executives and managers, managers expecting to take on leadership roles, and those who are not in management positions but are expected to lead and influence others in the course of their work, as well as past participants in LHA leadership courses.

OVERVIEW:

Join your peers for a day of diversity as you discuss the nuances of today’s workforce and the challenges of the diverse populations we encounter as co-workers, subordinates, peers and patients. This workshop will help identify the skills you need to successfully maneuver and effectively engage the multi-generational culture and the ever-evolving diverse population. This program integrates components of psychologically safe spaces that allow participants to feel comfortable asking questions and sharing their views. The aim is to help providers develop communication skills for obtaining medical and sexual histories that positively affect patient outcomes and guide future needs through providing culturally-competent care for all individuals, families and communities. With several generations – with different communication, learning and working styles – now together in the workplace, we must first understand what is at risk and what is possible for businesses of today and tomorrow. Self-awareness is the first step to better understanding others in the workplace in order to reach our full potential and thrive. We’ll explore our communication styles, what the common ground is and how to harness the power of a diverse workforce.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:

As a result of attending this training program, attendees should be able to;

• Understand own personal and generational biases;
• Identify the difference between stereotyping and generalizing;
• Recognize the influencers and preferences of each generation along with commonalities with others;
• Distinguish challenges and opportunities when leading and working with other generations;
• Demonstrate ways to build a culture centered around common ground;
• Maintain an individual plan to engage a generationally diverse workforce;
• Identify proper terminology and distinguish between the different gender identities

  in LGBTQ+ patients;

• Determine ways to create inclusive healthcare environments for LGBTQ+ patients;
• Utilize respectful communication to affirm clinical encounters and meet the

  individual needs of LGBTQ+ patients; and

• Analyze both the general and health disparities seen the LGBTQ+ population and create inclusive environments to deliver quality healthcare.

MEET YOUR FACULTY

Chelsea Harris, Consultant, Success Labs

Harris’ experience includes communications, brand management, strategic planning, digital marketing and workforce technology. She has led a variety of complex projects that have led her to understand communication gaps amongst teams and the challenges across generations coupled with ever evolving technology. Prior to joining Success Labs, she spent more than five years at Louisiana Economic Development, is a graduate of LSU and currently serves as treasurer of the Baton Rouge Children’s Advocacy Center.

Paula A. Kensler, DNP, MBA, RN, Instructor of Clinical Nursing, LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing.

Dr. Kensler has been a registered nurse for 40 years, including 20+ years in nursing administration. More recently she serves as the instructor of clinical nursing for the academic health sciences center and is the program director of the Executive Nurse Leader, Doctor of Nursing Practice program. With  a background in the practice setting including three consecutive Magnet designations, supporting the growth and development of nurses and healthcare teams has always been a priority and translates into excellent care and patient outcomes. Her passion continues in the academic setting, teaching leadership and management courses, and researching student success, diversity and teams.

Jessica Landry, DNP, FNP-BC, Coordinator of the Primary Care Nurse Practitioner Program, LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing.

Landry received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. She obtained her Doctor of Nursing Practice at the University of South Alabama. She has been a Registered Nurse for 17 years, a Family Nurse Practitioner for 14 years, and has served in academia for seven years. She developed the Advocacy™ Program that trains healthcare providers how to communicate and provide culturally-sensitive care to lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, and intersex (LGBTQI) patients nationwide. Dr. Landry is the program director for the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) Grant and SANE Program at the LSU School of Nursing.

Todd Tartavoulle, DNS, APRN, CNS-BC, Associate Professor, LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing

Dr. Tartavoulle is an associate professor of clinical nursing at LSU Health New Orleans School of Nursing. He has eleven years of experience working in an academic health sciences center and has taught courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels including critical care nursing, health assessment, perspectives in nursing, nursing research and evidence-based practice. Dr. Tartavoulle is the primary investigator on several research studies including predictors of quality of life, fatigue, and sexual dysfunction in the pulmonary hypertension population. He has presented his research findings at both local and national conferences. Other research interests include the effect of advocacy training on healthcare provider and nursing student attitudes on LGBTQ patients, and leadership and communication among baccalaureate nursing students.

CANCELLATION POLICY
Cancellations received in writing up to one week prior to a scheduled event will be charged a cancellation fee of $40 (per person, per event). Registrants who are unable to attend an LHA educational event are permitted to, and encouraged to send a substitute without incurring a cancellation fee. Please send written notice of any substitutions prior to the scheduled event. Cancellations received less than one week prior to the scheduled event, or individuals who fail to attend will result in a non-refundable registration fee. 

 
TRANSFER POLICY
Transfer requests must be in writing and received one week prior to the event to receive a credit to use at a later date. A $40 transfer fee will be charged.  The LHA will hold your credit for a period of one year following the start date of the program for which you were originally registered. Transfer requests received less than one week prior to event will result in a non-refundable registration fee.
